Dental Fillings Q & A

What are fillings?

After your doctor removes the decay and bacteria from the cavity in your tooth, the space that remains must be filled with a hard material that keeps the tooth strong.

This is called a dental filling. Fillings can also be placed into holes or cracks in your teeth to make sure they’re sturdy and won’t accumulate more damage.

When you get a filling, your doctor uses a local anesthetic to numb your mouth. Then, your doctor drills into your tooth to thoroughly clean out the decayed material from the inside.

If the nerve beneath your tooth is exposed, your doctor covers it with a liner first, and then applies the filling material in layers, hardening it with a light after each layer. Then, your doctor trims any excess filling material and polishes your tooth to make it look shiny and natural.

What happens if I don’t get a filling?

Your teeth develop cavities when you eat a poor diet and don’t practice adequate oral hygiene. If you don’t get your cavities filled, your health could be seriously compromised.

Eventually, your tooth decays to the point that it falls out. Soon, the bone beneath your tooth becomes infected and the infection continues to spread throughout your bones and the rest of your body.

You can prevent cavities by flossing and brushing your teeth at least twice a day, eating healthy foods, and not drinking too much coffee. Since cavities are often undetectable in their early stages, it’s important to get regular dental exams and cleanings at Mayer Dental Care.

How should I care for my fillings?

You should care for your fillings in the same way you care for your natural teeth. You must:

  • Brush your teeth twice each day
  • Floss between your teeth
  • Get your teeth cleaned regularly
  • Use an antibacterial mouthwash at least once a day

If you notice your filled tooth is particularly sensitive or if it feels sharp, your filling might have fallen out of place. In this case, call Mayer Dental Care as soon as you can to have the team fix it.
